Too little, too late..

Hi everybody!

I know, I should be ashamed how long it took me to write something again. But we had a lot of work, preparing lessons, writing reflections etc. So a small recap of what happened last week.
I have been teaching quite a lot of lessons, a lot of them are co-teaching with teachers, and I think you really learn a lot from this. I met a lot of different types of pupils, which also was very interesting, because you get an idea on how to handle different people. It was also nice to see courses you normally don't get to see in Belgium. I especially liked Food technology and Photography. When I saw the photographs of those pupils, I got so jealous, so I decided to take a Photography course next year.

Besides teaching, we went to see the Performing Arts Festival at Groby. They have a lot of talent at the college, and I was really surprised of what I got to see: great dancers, people who composed their own piano song which gave me goosebumps, great singers,... Unfortunately, there were a lot of younger pupils interrupting the performances by their constant chatting and there was an accident with former Groby pupils who disturbed a performance. But pupils came to apologize in place of these younger students, telling us this was the first time things like these happened.
After the Festival, we went to Leicester to meet with Sophie. We first went to a bar, which was qsuite nice but unfortunately the musci was too loud so we couldn't understand each other. After that we went to a pub, which was very nice and more peaceful. I even got the "Yellow Card", a kind of student card so you can get cheaper drinks in that bar. After closing time (yes pubs do close quite early here) we went to a pita bar for our late night hunger. This wasn't such a big success because i could still taste the pita the morning after.

On Saturday, we went to Leicester to do some final shopping. I guided Thomas through the Blu Ray- division of the HMV by phone, so I don't think our films will eventually be cheaper than at home. On Sunday we all worked hard for the upcoming school week.
Now it's back to our school routine, teaching and helping teachers out.

Finally teaching....

And loving every minute of it! Today I taught French, History and assisted in a P.E. lesson. Yes me, P.E.! I even played basketball with the pupils. I had a lot of fun and the feedback from the pupils was really positive.
That sure feels good after a weekend of hard work. Okay, we did go to Borders bookstore, where i bought way too many books, but they weren't all for me.

On Friday we went to Nottingham, the city of Robin Hood. we visited Nottingham Castle, where they had some interesting expositions at the museum and a lovely garden. Afterwards we wanted to visit the Caves of Nottingham, but when we got there, we saw a leaflet of something that seemed far more interesting to us: The Galleries of Justice, a museum of Crime and Punishment. We had an interactive tour, where I was convicted for Witchcraft and Fornication, but was released after I offered the Sherriff some personal pleasure.

After that we went back home and I cooked my famous pasta with smoked salmon, which everyone seemed to like.

We are all preparing for our next lessons, maybe we will watch a film or I'll just read my book.

Endelijk zijn we aan het lesgeven en ik geniet van elke minuut. Ik heb vandaag Frans, Geschiedenis en L.O. gegeven. Ja ik, L.O.! Ik heb zelfs basketball gespeeld met de leerlingen. Ik vond het heel erg leuk en ook de feedback van leerkrachten en leerlingen was erg positief. Dat heeft ons allemaal goed gedaan na een weekend hard werken. OK we zijn ook naar de Borders boekenwinkel geweest, en ja ik heb veel te veel boeken gekocht, maar ze zijn niet allemaal voor mij.

Vrijdag zijn we naar Nottingham geweest, de stad van Robin Hood. We hebben het kasteel bezocht, waar je verschillende interessante tentoonstellingen had in het museum, en een mooie tuin.
Daarna wilden we naar de Caves van Nottingham gaan, maar eenmaal daar aangekomen vonden we een folder van iets dat ons nog interessanter leek: The Galleries of Justice, een museum over criminaliteit en straffen, waar we een interactieve tour kregen met verschillende acteurs. Verschillende bezoekers moesten op de strafbank komen, waaronder ik natuurlijk. Ik werd beschuldigd van Hekserij en Ontucht, maar werd vrijgesproken na de Sheriff wat "personal pleasure" aan te bieden.
Daarna heb ik thuis mijn beroemde pasta met gerookte zalm klaargemaakt, die door iedereen wel gesmaakt werd.

We zijn ons nu aan het voorbereiden voor onze volgende lessen, maar daarna zullen we waarschijnlijk een filmpje kijken of ga ik wat verder in mijn boek lezen.

Culture and work does mingle....

On Tuesday, we went to Warwick Castle. When we arrived, it looked nothing like I had imagined. I thought it would have been an ancient castle, which you could visit and where there would be a little animation. Instead we entered some kind of amusement park, with people walking around in Medieval clothes, and entire rooms filled with wax figures (which I should have known, since it is owned by Madame Tussaud's).

It was quite impressive, even though I almost wet my pants on the castle walls and towers, because I had a severe case of fear of falling down.

The figures were really impressing and life like and i could take some great pictures. The trebuchet was kind of disappointing, since the man kept talking and talking and when they finally launched it, it flew quite high, but not very far. The funniest thing was the man with bucket who put out the fire.

Overall it was a nice trip, because it was not at all what I expected, but it was interesting and nice.

On Wednesday, we finally saw another side of Leicester. We took a nice walk through the city and visited the cathedral (where we had a little tour by a nice cute lady who reminded me of my grandma, always talking to everyone), the guildhall (not much to see but a nice old building) and the Jawry Wall museum, a really nice archeological museum with an interesting interactive part especially for children.

Today we all had a work day: I typed all my observations and got some great ideas for my endwork. It is finally getting more real. Tonight we are going to the pub, relaxing after our hard day of work.

Dinsdag zijn we naar Warwick Castle geweest. Toen we er aankwamen was het helemaal niet zoals ik verwacht had: ik verwachtte een groot oud kasteel, met hier en daar wat randanimatie, maar we kamen terecht in een echt amusementspark: het was een mooi kasteel, met veel animatie en kamers vol met wassen figuren (wat ik natuurlijk had moeten weten want het is eigendom van Madame Tussaud's).

Het was erg impressionant, behalve dat ik bijna in mijn broek plaste op de kasteelmuren dankzij een aanval van acute valvrees. De wassen beelden waren geweldig en levensecht en ik kon enkele hele goede foto's nemen.

de trebuchet was vrij teleurstellend aangezien die man maar bleef en bleef praten en wij dus meer en meer verwachtten. Toen ze eindelijk de "vuurbal" afschoten, ging deze wel erg hoog, maar niet erg ver. Het grappigste was de man met de emmer die het vuur moest doven.

Op woensdag hebben we eindelijk een andere kant van Leicester gezien. We hebben een leuke wandeling gemaakt en verschillende dingen bezocht: de kathedraal, waar we een korte rondleiding hebben gehad van een lief oud vrouwtje dat me aan mijn grootmoeder deed denken, de Guildhall, een leuk oud gebouw maar waar niet veel te zien is en het Jewry Wall museum, een leuk archeologisch museum met een interactief gedeelte voor kinderen.

Vandaag hebben we allemaal een werkdag gehad: ik heb al mijn observaties getypt en veel ideeën opgedaan voor mijn eindwerk, dat eindelijk invulling krijgt. Zo meteen gaan we naar de pub, even relaxen.

A busy weekend/ Our Shakespearian adventure

We had a rather busy weekend: on Saturday, we went to Leicester. It would have been a good mix between culture and some shopping, but it quickly changed into a shopping spree. We lost Timmy quite soon, he went to play Pokémon and wanted to get his hair cut. Me, Lindsay and Natalia stayed together and Natalie and I got to know each other a lot better: we have the same kind of humour, laugh at the same things and even have the same taste in clothing.

We went to a Chinese restaurant in Leicester at night, which was nice, but kind of greasy, like all the food here it seems. The food is slowly getting to my bowels.

At night, we went to this completely wrong club, called "Revolution". The DJ kept talking through the music, changed songs every 30 seconds and we were the only women who didn't show their bottoms or breasts. The crowd was mainly Indian or Pakistani, so you can imagine how well we stood out.

On Sunday, Molly made us a nice breakfast with eggs, bacon, mushrooms and toast. Especially Natalia and I really enjoyed being pampered like that. We didn't do anything in particular that day, we were all very tired and lazy, so we just hung around each other's rooms. At night we had a nice Sunday dinner with Molly, Dave, Anna, Claire and James. The others watched a film afterwards, but I stayed upstairs and enjoyed some me-time.

Today we were supposed to get up early and go have a run, but I kind of turned of our alarm clock, so we were just in time for breakfast. After that we left for Stratford upon Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. It is a really nice town, with some lovely old buildings, too bad it loses its charm because of the enormous signs of the shops that are everywhere.

At night, the parents of Sophie, a former KdG student who now teaches here, came by to have a lovely diner. They are lovely people and we did have a really nice chat. They live close to me, in Brasschaat.

Tomorrow we are going to Warwick Castle. I'm really curious and eager to have a look at this ancient castle.

We hebben een vrij druk weekend achter de rug. Zaterdag zijn we naar Leicester geweest. Normaal gezien zou het dus een leuke mix geworden zijn van cultuur en shoppen, maar het draaide al snel uit op een shopnamiddag. We waren Timmy vrij snel kwijt, hij ging Pokémon spelen en heeft zijn haar eindelijk laten knippen.

Na enkele uren had ik het echt wel gezien en deed heel mijn lijf pijn van het slenteren, maar de dames wisten van geen ophouden en bleven doorgaan. Ze hebben dus heel wat gekocht, in tegenstelling tot mij. Natalia, Lindsay en ik zijn voornamelijk bij elkaar gebleven en ik heb Natalia echt beter leren kennen: we hebben dezelfde humor, lachen om dezelfde dingen (giechelen zelfs hetzelfde wanneer we de slappe lach hebben) en hebben dezelfde smaak qua kleding.

's Avonds zijn we naar een compleet foute club gegaan, "the Revolution". Tanja en Ann moesten en zouden uitgaan, dus is iedereen maar meegegaan. We waren de enige dames die geen borsten of billen lieten zien. Het publiek bestond voornamelijk uit Indiërs en Pakistanen, dus je kan jezelf wel voorstellen dat we echt wel opvielen.

Op zondag had Molly een goed en stevig ontbijt gemaakt, met eieren, spek, champignons en toast. We hebben de rest van de dag niet veel meer gedaan, aangezien we allemaal nogal moe en lui waren, dus hebben we voornamelijk wat rondgehangen op elkaars kamers. 's avonds waren Anna en Claire hier voor een lekker Sunday diner. Daarna hebben de anderen beneden een film bekeken, maar ben ik even boven gebleven voor wat tijd voor mezelf.

Vandaag zijn we naar Stratford upon Avon gegaan, de geboorteplaats van William Shakespeare. Je hebt er geweldige mooie oude gebouwen, die spijtig genoeg verpest worden door de gigantische reclameborden van de ontelbare winkels. Hierdoor verliest het wel wat van zijn charme.

Deze avond waren de ouders van Sophie, een oud-KdG-studente die nu hier woont en werkt, op bezoek en hebben we genoten van een heerlijk diner. Het zijn erg leuke mensen, die niet eens zo ver van mij wonen, nl. in Brasschaat.

Morgen gaan we naar Warwick Castle en ik ben erg benieuwd wat er allemaal te zien is in dit historische kasteel.

We finally know what to do.... sort of..

Today started with a planning hour and afterwards a meeting with Viv. She told us that the teachers weren't pleased with our way of behaving in class, we didn't move around while observing and were too passive. At that moment, I got a little angry and told Viv that we actually didn't have a clue on what we had to do while observing and that we had no idea what we had to do the week after half term. We finally got an explanation on what was expected of us, so we could see what we should do and what we had done wrong while observing.
So with renewed spirit, I went around school, talking to random teachers to get my schedule together. It became clear that the teachers appreciated us coming to talk to them and asking them whether we could help them out.

So now I have my complete schedule, teaching and co teaching a lot of French, but also English (where I can teach a lesson of Dutch =) ) and History, but also Food and even Physical Education (yes me).

Yesterday evening we went to the pub down the road to get a drink and afterwards we went to the Blue Bell pub to have a nice and cheap dinner. I haven't got a clue of what we are going to do tonight (probably watch a film or something), but tomorrow we are going to Leicester to explore the city and maybe do some shopping, I heard that there is a big music shop so I will be guitar watching =) (maybe it wasn't such a good idea taking the Visa card with me).

Vandaag zijn we gestart met een uurtje planning en daarna een meeting met Viv. Zij vertelde ons dat de leerkrachten eigelijk niet zo blij waren met ons gedrag tijdens de observaties en dat ze ons veel te passief vonden. Blijkbaar is het hier de gewoonte dat stagaires rondlopen tijdens de les en meehelpen, iets wat wij dus totaal niet wisten. Ik werd hier een beetje geïrriteerd door, en heb haar dus verteld dat wij er geen idee van hebben wat er van ons verwacht werd en dus ook niet weten wat we moeten doen.

Toen dit misverstand van de baan was geholpen, ben ik vol goede moed op leerkrachten af gestapt met de vraag of ik dus tijdens hun lessen een handje kon helpen. Blijkbaar werd dit wel erg geapprecieerd en ze bleken al een stuk toegeeflijker naar ons toe.

Ik heb dus nu ongeveer wel mijn lessenrooster en zal dus veel Frans geven, maar ook Geschiedenis en Engels (waar ik een les Nederlands mag geven =) ).

Gisteravond zijn we naar de pub geweest hier in de straat en daarna naar de Blue Bell pub, waar we goed en goedkoop hebben gegeten.

Morgen gaan we Leicester verkennen en ook wat shoppen. Ik heb gehoord dat er een grote muziekwinkel is, dus ik zal dus gaan gitaar- bewonderen (misschien was het toch niet zo'n goed idee de Visa-kaart mee te nemen).

Shops are closer than you think

Today and yesterday we have been observing some really interesting lessons. What caught me the most was that the school itself is really pupilcentred and communicative, but that most of the lessons aren't.
We watched some nice lessons that we normally don't see in Belgium, e.g. drama, dance, graphics and psychology. We also saw a rather strange History lesson about medicine, which we thought was only a couple lessons, but when we saw that they had a book called "Medicine and health through time", which is something that we couldn't imagine doing in Belgium.

After school ,we went to Leicester. We didn't get much further than a shopping centre, but we finally got our first Starbucks coffee, which made everything OK. We are going to explore the entire city during our half term.

Today I had to go to the shop to get some stuff for dinner. When I told James, Molly's son in law, he asked me which shop, so I told him that I was going to the village store near the roundabout(of which they have a lot in England). He told me there was a store opposite of the pub down the road, which I thought I had never seen. I thought it would be a very tiny store, but when we arrived there, I felt so stupid! We pass the shop every day so off course I've seen it!

Now we will have a nice and relaxed evening, maybe we will be going to the pub down the road, but we are still not sure.

Gisteren en vandaag hebben we weer een hele dag geobserveerd. Wat me vooral opviel, was dat de school zelf erg gefocused is op de leerlingen en erg communicatief is, maar dat slechts enkele leerkrachten ook echt communicatief lesgeven.
We hebben enkele interessante lessen gezien, zoals bijv. drama, dans, psychologie en grafische vormgeving, dus dingen die we in België niet te zien krijgen. We hebben ook een heel vreemde Geschiedenis les gezien over medicijnen in de Renaissance. We dachten dat dit slechts enkele lessen waren, totdat we de boeken van de leerlingen zagen en dat zij dus de geschiedenis van de geneeskunde zagen over een heel jaar.

Na de lessen zijn we gisteren naar Leicester, waar we een shopping center verkend hebben en gelukkig hebben we eindelijk onze eerste Starbucks koffie, wat alles helemaal goed maakte. De stad zelf gaan we tijdens onze vrije periode verkennen.

Daarnet moest ik nog wat spullen hebben om onze maaltijd te kunnen maken. Dus zei ik tegen James (Molly's schoonzoon) dat ik naar de winkel aan het rond punt ging. Hij vertelde me dat er ook een winkel was over de pub. Ik was erg verbaasd, want ik dacht daar nog nooit een winkel gezien te hebben. Toen we er aan kwamen, voelde ik me zo dom, we passeerden deze winkel elke dag!

Vanavond houden we een rustige avond, misschien gaan we nog naar de pub hier in de straat.

School means chaos

Today was the first day at Groby College. We arrived a bit late because of the snow, but Viv, our guide in the school, didn't make a big deal out of it.

We were immediately thrown into the system: after a short meeting, we already had to observe lessons, one Maths lesson and one French lesson. Even though everything was quite chaotic, I've never seen such a communicative Maths lesson. Even though I didn't understand much of the lesson, something with equations, I actually enjoyed the lesson and it was an eye opener.

The pupils in the French lesson were pupils that were preparing for their exams a year earlier, so their level was really high.



After the lunch break, it was Tutor time. Every teacher has a number of pupils from the different years and they guide them during their entire carreer in Groby. I was shown around school by two very nice and polite girls. the school is gigantic and I am sure that I will get lost a couple of times.



After school, we went to Leicester to do some food shopping. We wanted to go and explore the city, but since it was raining and also getting a tad late, we decided to do that tomorrow. We just enjoyed a nice meal, made by me, Mama Evi, and now we are going to enjoy a relaxing evening together.

Vandaag was onze eerste dag op Groby College. Vanwege de sneeuw waren we een beetje te laat, maar dat vond Viv, onze begeleidster op school niet zo erg.

Na een korte vergadering werden we letterlijk in het systeem gesmeten en mochten we al meteen de verschillen met het Vlaamse onderwijs observeren. Samen met Timmy heb ik een les Wiskunde en een les Frans gezien, en er waren duidelijke verschillen. Alles kwam nogal chaotisch over.

Ik had nog nooit zo een communicatieve les Wiskunde gezien, iets waar mijn vroegere leerkrachten Wiskunde zeker nog iets van kunnen leren.

De les Frans was erg aangenaam: de vijf leerlingen bereidden zich allemaal voor om hun eindexamens een jaar eerder af te leggen. Het niveau was dus ook hoog.



Na de lunch was het tijd voor "Tutor time". Elke leerkracht heeft een aantal leerlingen van alle leerjaren die hij of zij begeleidt gedurende hun hele carrière op Groby. Ik werd rondgeleid door twee van hen en aangezien de grootte van de school ben ik er zeker van dat ik nog enkele keren verloren ga lopen.

Na de lessen zijn we naar Leicester gereden om wat inkopen te doen. Daarna wilden we ook nog de stad zelf een beetje gaan verkennen, maar aangezien het regende en al wat later werd, zijn we terug naar Desford gereden. Daar hebben we genoten van een goede maaltijd, gemaakt door Mama Evi en nu gaan we een rustige avond met zijn allen tegemoet.
